Although theory and practice are often perceived today as entirely separate fields, the history of philosophy reveals a much more complex relationship between epistêmê, meaning theoretical “knowledge,” and technê, meaning practical “craft.” Despite appearing contradictory, these two concepts are closely connected and complementary: technology gives rise to knowledge, while knowledge gives rise to technology.
More importantly, both are considered fundamental human virtues and therefore must have a moral foundation. Twenty young writers who have embraced Cappadocia University’s guiding principles of “Reason, Morality, Justice, and Decorum” explore the relationship between technology and humanity within this framework.
Technology and Humans is the 2022 selection of the High School Students’ Short Story Competition, traditionally organized by the Department of Turkish Language and Literature. The collection questions what the relationship between technology and humanity should look like in the 21st century and beyond in order to uphold human values and contribute to saving our planet from the destruction it currently faces. Through their stories, young writers who combine knowledge with artistic expression offer their own perspectives on the present and future, encouraging readers to reconsider humanity’s relationship with technology and the world.
