Cappadocia University Participated in Zero Waste Forum 2026
Cappadocia University participated in Zero Waste Forum 2026, which brought together participants from 183 countries, representing the University on an international platform dedicated to zero waste, climate change, and sustainable development.
Held at Istanbul Atatürk Airport under the theme “The Road to Antalya: Zero Waste as Climate Action,” the forum brought together heads of state, ministers, representatives of international organisations, mayors, academics, business leaders, and civil society organisations. The opening session featured Emine Erdoğan, Honorary Chair of the Zero Waste Foundation, Anaclaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, and Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation.
Representing Cappadocia University at the forum were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bahar and Assist. Prof. Dr. Derya Çetinoğlu from the Department of Tourist Guiding, together with Dr. Kübranur Birtek, representing the University’s Sustainability Office.
Organised with the coordination of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and attended by representatives from universities across Türkiye, the forum focused on zero waste, climate change, the circular economy, and sustainable development. Discussions covered environmental policies, examples of good practice, and opportunities for collaboration at local, national, and international levels. The forum also served as an important platform for highlighting the role of zero waste practices as a form of climate action in the lead-up to COP31, which Türkiye will host in 2026.
Throughout the forum, panel discussions, presentations, and knowledge-sharing sessions provided opportunities to exchange current approaches and best practices for strengthening environmental sustainability. Participants shared experiences and innovative solutions related to combating climate change, improving resource efficiency, and expanding the implementation of zero waste practices.
Cappadocia University’s participation in this international platform represents an important contribution to strengthening its efforts in sustainable campus development, zero waste implementation, and environmental sustainability. The knowledge and best practices gained through the forum are expected to further advance the University’s sustainability initiatives.
