The Cappadocia Gastronomy Festival Embraces a Sustainability-Focused Approach
The 5th Cappadocia Gastronomy Festival, hosted by Cappadocia University under the auspices of the Nevşehir Governorship, will take place on 15–16 May with a strong focus on sustainability.
Open to the public and held in Mustafapaşa, this year’s festival approaches sustainability not merely as a theme but as a measurable and manageable responsibility. Organised under the theme “Local Heritage, Starred Tables,” the festival presents an integrated model that brings together local production, rural development, women’s cooperatives, the preservation of cultural heritage, and climate responsibility.
Cappadocia University defines sustainable gastronomy through the promotion of local and seasonal products, the preservation of traditional knowledge, the reduction of food waste, the recognition of local producers’ contributions, and the strengthening of the rural economy. Festival activities—including the Local Producers’ Market, the Gastronomy Stage, thematic talks, and the Mustafapaşa Culinary Route—reflect these principles in practice.
One of the festival’s key sustainability initiatives this year is the measurement and offsetting of its carbon footprint. This effort is carried out with the sponsorship of Commited, a company specialising in sustainability technologies and providing carbon footprint assessment and emissions offsetting solutions. In collaboration with Commited, Cappadocia University will scientifically measure the emissions generated throughout the festival by analysing major emission sources such as transportation, energy consumption, and waste generation to calculate the event’s total carbon footprint.
Carbon offsetting refers to compensating for greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere by supporting projects that reduce or prevent emissions elsewhere. Within this framework, the festival’s emissions will be offset through Gold Standard-certified carbon credits. As part of the offsetting process, renewable energy projects in Türkiye will be supported, contributing to the generation of clean energy.
With this comprehensive approach, the Cappadocia Gastronomy Festival stands out as more than a gastronomy event. It represents a responsible and holistic event management model that brings together local development, cultural heritage preservation, and climate responsibility within a shared sustainability vision.
