🌍 “Soil is the Root of Life; Act Today for a Drought-Resilient Tomorrow!”
Every year on June 17, the world marks the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought to raise awareness of global challenges like land degradation, desertification, and water scarcity. With the 2025 theme, “Peace with Land, Security for the Future,” this day reminds us that healthy soils are essential for life, food, and climate resilience.
Why Does It Matter?
🌿 Soil is being lost: Around 24 billion tons of fertile soil are lost each year. This poses a serious threat to agriculture, water resources, and food security.
💧 Drought is spreading: With climate change, prolonged droughts are increasing; water sources are diminishing, and habitats are at risk.
🥀 Biodiversity is under threat: Deforestation and land degradation reduce plant cover and endanger wildlife.
🌍 It drives displacement: Reduced crop yields and lack of water force millions to leave their homes in search of livable conditions.
What Can We Do?
🌱 Support soil-friendly practices: Choose sustainable farming, local and organic products, and regenerative agriculture.
💧 Save water: Use water consciously in daily life to help combat drought and protect vital resources.
🌳 Plant trees, protect green areas: Trees stabilize the soil, retain water, and regulate the climate.
📢 Raise awareness in your community: Inform others about the causes and consequences of drought and desertification to promote collective action.
💚 At Cappadocia University, we recognize the vital role of soil and water in sustaining life. We are committed to producing scientific and sustainable solutions in the fight against drought and desertification. 🌾
