Producer and Director Semih Kaplanoğlu was the Guest of Cappadocia Sustainability Talks

In the interview, which was attended by faculty members and students with great interest, master director Kaplanoğlu talked about his experiences in the world of cinema and the emergence of the film Wheat.

Organized by our Sustainability Office and the Department of Health, Culture, and Sports, Cappadocia Sustainability Talks series of Sustainable Cinema in Turkey: The conversation titled “The Case of ‘Wheat’ Movie” was held at Oktay Sinanoğlu Conference Hall with the moderation of Dr. Lecturer Selda Öztürk. Prof. Dr. Selda Öztürk moderated the conversation. Our Vice-Rector, Prof. Dr. İlhan Öztürk, faculty members, and students attended the interview.

Semih Kaplanoğlu both wrote and directed the movie Wheat.

Wheat, which took 5 years to produce and whose original language is English, is a black-and-white science fiction film written and directed by Semih Kaplanoğlu. Shot in the USA, Germany, and Turkey, it deals with drought, hunger, refugees, and genetic changes. The film stars Jean-Marc Barr, Ermin Bravo and Grigoriy Dobrygin. With “Wheat,” Semih Kaplanoğlu won the Tokyo Grand Prize at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival.

Before the talk, the Sustainable Development Society members organized activities to introduce the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Goals aim to end poverty, protect the environment, take action against the climate crisis, share prosperity somewhat, and promote peace.

Who is Semih Kaplanoğlu?

Born on April 4, 1963, in Izmir, Director, Screenwriter, and Producer Semih Kaplanoğlu graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Cinema and Television in 1984.

In addition to being a director, Semih Kaplanoğlu has written articles on plastic arts and cinema that have been translated into foreign languages. These articles were published in magazines such as Gergedan, Gösteri, Cumhuriyet, and Sanat Dünyamız between 1987 and 2003. He also wrote the catalog for Erol Akyavaş’s exhibition “Iconoclasts” at the Hermitage Museum in Saint-Peterburg in 1990.
