Our university has added another successful initiative to its sustainability efforts with the implementation of a Solar Power Plant (GES) System.
The Solar Power Plant (GES) System, installed on the roof of the Oktay Sinanoğlu Building in the Mustafapaşa Campus, began energy production on December 14, 2020. In its initial phase, the off-grid installation meets the building’s entire electricity demand, with the 144 monocrystalline panel system generating 48.24 kWp of energy.
Project Coordinator Dr. Rıfat Benveniste stated, “By using a technology that does not create environmental pollution, we are significantly reducing our university’s carbon footprint.” Benveniste noted that contract procedures for grid-connected operation are ongoing and that once completed, excess energy produced beyond the building’s needs will be fed into the distribution system, contributing to meeting the electricity demands of the surrounding area.
Dr. Sinan Akıllı from the Center for Environmental Humanities remarked, “Solar energy is not only a renewable and continuous energy source, but it also provides significant benefits—not just to our university but to the region—by producing no polluting waste and reducing external dependency.” Akıllı highlighted that Kapadokya University has four sustainability programs (KÜN Fire, KÜN Air, KÜN Water, KÜN Earth) and that the GES system was implemented under the KÜN Fire program. He emphasized that the university will continue its sustainability-focused initiatives.
