Project Summary | The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is an organization that sets international sustainability standards for the tourism industry. GSTC’s goal is to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism by minimizing its social, economic, and environmental impacts. Hotels are the most essential component of the tourism industry. In addition to providing accommodation services, hotels offer restaurants, entertainment options, meeting facilities, and various other services. Hotels directly impact environmental sustainability and must reduce their carbon footprint. The carbon footprint measures the ecological damage caused by human activities, expressed in units of carbon dioxide. Moreover, the direct release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributes to global warming. In this context, this study aims to calculate the carbon footprint to assess the environmental impacts of hotels. The data required to measure the carbon footprint include water usage, energy consumption, waste production, fuel consumption, construction, maintenance, and transportation materials. The Life Cycle Assessment for Environmental Prioritization (LEAP) software was used to analyze this data and evaluate sustainability performance and environmental impacts. Carbon footprint results were obtained using this software. Based on the results, a comparison was made between two different scenarios: Business as Usual (BAU) and Mitigation (MIT). The developed model provides a significant contribution to sustainable tourism and environmental management. |
