Project SummaryThe literature defines cultural and historical landscape areas as “geographical areas that contain natural and cultural resources, elements of natural life, are associated with historical events or activities, or exhibit various cultural and aesthetic values.” These areas are characterized by the harmonious coexistence of natural and human-made elements, their historical, aesthetic, ethnological, and anthropological significance, and their ability to represent the region’s dominant natural features, land use patterns, and traditional living textures.
In this context, Nevşehir province, located in the heart of Anatolia and Cappadocia, which has hosted many cultures, has been chosen as the study area. According to scientific research, archaeological excavations, and written texts, Nevşehir is one of Turkey’s most important cultural centers. In addition to the unique geological structure of the Cappadocia Region, the magical traces of life in the rock-carved areas have earned the “Göreme National Park and Cappadocia (Nevşehir)” a place on the “World Natural and Cultural Heritage” list.
The earliest settlements in Nevşehir date back to the Paleolithic period, followed by the Neolithic, Early Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Hittites, Roman Empire, Seljuk, Beyliks, Ottoman, and the Republic of Turkey civilizations. The region is home to rock-carved churches and Post-Byzantine churches, which have contributed to the Christian world, as well as the tolerant philosophy of Hacıbektaş-ı Veli, which played a leading role in the spread of Islam in Anatolia.
This project has been prepared to document and pass on the values of this culturally and historically rich province to future generations. In this context, the study aims to comprehensively analyze the historical and cultural landscape of Nevşehir, covering all historical periods and structures.
