Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and the Ministry of Industry and Technology, developments regarding national polar research and science expeditions carried out under the coordination of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Polar Research Institute were shared with our students at the event held at our University.

In the event held with the participation of Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, President of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center and Director of the Polar Research Institute, details about the scientific studies carried out in the Antarctic and Arctic regions were shared. Stating that the event was an excellent opportunity to come together with young people and share the work, Özsoy said: “It is a great pleasure for me to meet with our students and tell them about our expeditions. The interest and contribution of young people to these studies is very valuable for us.”

National Polar Science Expeditions and Strategy

Prof. Dr. Özsoy informed the students about the 8 National Antarctic Science Expeditions and 4 National Arctic Science Expeditions carried out so far and emphasized that these studies have played a crucial role in increasing the visibility and reputation of our country in the international arena. He also stated that polar research has been communicated to different segments of society through 8 Polar Science Symposiums and 3 Polar Festivals organized at the national level.

Stating that Turkey’s scientific activities in the Antarctic and Arctic regions have enabled our country to take a firm stance not only in academic circles but also in the eyes of the public, Özsoy said: “The scientific studies we carry out in the polar regions strengthen our status in the international arena and make our people proud of these achievements. From the academic world to high school students, everyone’s interest in these studies increases our motivation.”

TÜBİTAK Supported Polar Projects

During the event, information was also given about the TÜBİTAK CUP 1001 project calls, which support scientific studies to be carried out in the polar regions within the scope of our country’s Polar Science Strategy. Özsoy stated that undergraduate and graduate students can participate in these projects as fellows.

Stating that polar research is of interest not only at the university level but also to high school students and their families, Özsoy said that young people of all ages have the opportunity to learn about scientific studies on critical issues such as climate change, global warming, biodiversity, marine life and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Arctic. He also briefly explained the equipment used in polar research and their field applications.
