Celebrated worldwide in 1991 with the initiative of the International Federation of Sports for All (TAFISA), October 3rd World Walking Day aims to draw attention to the importance of being physically active in terms of health. Today’s living conditions, with the influence of technology, have evolved to allow us to continue our daily lives with less physical effort. However, this relatively easy but sedentary lifestyle has unfortunately increased the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis in societies. Walking, on the other hand, is the easiest exercise method that can be applied for individuals of all age groups and socioeconomic classes, as it does not require special equipment or space. Slowing down the fast pace of daily life with short walks will be good for both our mental and physical health, and walks taken outdoors will help us connect with nature. In addition, choosing to walk short distances instead of using motor vehicles will also be an ecologically conscious action, as it will reduce our carbon footprint. Let’s take today as an opportunity and take a step outside of the environments we are in today. I am sure the rest will come. Happy World Walking Day.
